It's raining tablets.
In the hope of pin away iPad from Apple Inc. and $ 20 billion market it controls now, dozens of manufacturers are unveiling over 80 computers touch screen at the Consumer Electronics Show, the annual showcase of tech here.
The rush is on, and not only because of the hugely successful iPad but because the bet that the tablet computer manufacturers will become a ubiquitous household gadget.
"Today we think tablets such as mobile devices, but as prices go down we can see them around the House used for all types of uses, said Ross Rubin, an analyst for technology research firm NPD Group." "It might be a plus for observation, or a more durable than the children play with education.
Or so even that digital photo frames, weather dashboards or recipes, Rubin books added.
During the speech by Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, the company has shown a handful of pills again powered by its Windows operating system.
One upcoming applications for the tablet will be a newsreader application, parent company The Times, Tribune Co. The application, called Mosaic, creates a palpable photographs mobile gaming, when operated, reveal a title associated with the photo that users can open and read.
"This is a very different way, visual for readers sort and customize the way that they want to see news delivered," said Eddy Hartenstein, co-Chair of Forum. "You only touch and it flowers.
The program can be used to read the news from a number of newspapers from la Tribune, including The Times, the Chicago Tribune and the Hartford current. Users can also choose to add "feeds" of blogs, Twitter and other online sources.
The application will be available in an associated Microsoft Tablet digital store and is free. The app will include advertising in the highest resolution, Tribune officials said rather than lower resolution ads often found online.
Newspapers have been under siege in the past few years, as readers cancel their paid print subscriptions and to hop online for the same articles free of charge. Some publishers had hoped that online advertising revenues would eventually constitute the shortfall in print advertising and subscriptions. Instead of this, revenue advertising online have decreased by 12% in 2009, according to the latest figures available from the Association of America, newspaper.
"As income print journal continues to decline, online advertising revenues could not compensate losses," said Greg Sterling, Sterling Market Intelligence Analyst. "Now everyone is considering paid templates."
The emergence of tablets and mobile devices introduced publishers with a new opportunity to encourage readers to pay for news delivered on these devices. But it isn't a slam dunk to get people to subscribe, said Alan Mutter, a San Francisco media analyst.
Consumers, although only a small minority, have shown a willingness to spend money for news. In a Pew Research Center report released in December, 18% of the 755 users said that they had paid for digital articles or reports of newspapers or magazines at least once.
"It would be miraculous to get people to pay for news on the Internet," Sterling said. "On shelves, there is a best ball, but the pricing and the user experience must be good."
