Anthropology group attempts to relieve tempers after removing the word 'Science' (NYT)

American Anthropological Association had caused agitation by dropping the word "science" of its long-term plan, angering the anthropologists who concerned about their growing domain too soft evidence-based. All three references to the word "science" was excised and two were replaced by the expression "public understanding of humanity".

Monday, the association issued a statement of clarification, saying that it recognizes "crucial place in the scientific method." many anthropological research

Damon Dozier, Director of the association for public affairs, said: "we have heard about top and strong and clear our members that they focuses on the long-term plan." We'll discuss the words again. »

The association is an umbrella group that includes several disciplines ranging from physical anthropology - like skulls over subjects fossilized - human interpretation, such as race and gender research study. There is a cultural divide for a long time to the association between researchers, based on evidence, which include some social anthropologists and those more interested in defending the rights of women and indigenous peoples. The new plan last month, long-term approved to these differences.

Monday statement defined association anthropology as "a holistic and expansive discipline that spans the full width of human history and culture." Anthropology is based on the methods of the humanities and sciences, she added.

Mr. Dozier said: "Say us holistic discipline diversity."

Peter n. Peregrine, Chairman of anthropological sciences, a subsidiary of the association, said Monday that he heard "outrage and enormous interest" of its members on the phasing-out references to science, some wonder how they could justify existence of the Department, their if their national organization did not anthropology as a science.

But Mr. Peregrine expressed hope as regards the statement by Monday, the "holistic" interpretation means that science is included in the anthropological understanding of human beings humans.

However, the differences between scientific and humanistic approaches may be too large to be filled. "I don't really see how or why anthropology should result in human sciences," said Frank Marlowe, President-elect of society of evolutionary anthropology, another association affiliated, given that the social sciences are empirical, then Science human analytical, critical or speculative.

"Evolutionary anthropologists we are more than by new social or cultural anthropologists many but not all are post-modern, which seems to translate Antiscience," said Dr. Marlowe.
