As NASA prepares to retire its shuttle fleet, space agency looking to trade for developing spacecraft space that carry freight industry and in the future, people, to the international space station. A future space capsule Dragon commercially developed test launch is part of this effort.
For the historic launch this week of a gear commercial from the Space Center Kennedy, the blastoff and landing provided to Pacific hours later is equally important.
Flight test marks the first time a commercial spacecraft has never tried to re-enter the atmosphere of the Earth, signifies that the dish must withstand scorching temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Celsius.
But it is not only a demonstration of the capacity of the private sector to create secure and reliable spacecraft. He is also the first launch for commercial transport the NASA Orbital, or available on the market, program that uses NASA funds to stimulate the development of new spacecraft in the commercial sector services.
Phil McAlister, acting Director of the NASA commercial development of space flight, warns journalists at the Kennedy Space against reading too in the launch success or failures. "I wanted to emphasize the fact that it is a test flight." It is not in any way an indictment for or against the whole program if abnormalities. We expect anomalies, "he said."
The reusable spacecraft Dragon and Falcon 9 rocket was developed by the company California technologies for space exploration, commonly called SpaceX. Demonstration this week will be a first for the profession of dragon and only the second to the Falcon 9, chased off the coast in June, despite the SpaceX the chances of success of the inaugural mission were approximately 70 percent ratings successfully rocket.
Gwynne Shotwell is President of SpaceX. Speaking alongside McAlister Monday, she says odds are that there are important issues during the first three test flights. But, she says, she thinks that the next mission will probably be a success. "If I want to have a cloud over my head, I would say the same percentage – 70% success", said Shotwell.
SpaceX is one of the two companies, NASA is investing a total of 500 million through the program four years products. NASA has described the revolutionary programme, saying: it allows the space agency turning its attention to the development of new generation gear could travel beyond low Earth orbit.
Of commercially available program, NASA is essentially the lead investor in the capsule of dragon and Falcon 9 rocket.
Shotwell is a public-private partnership. NASA spent 253 million so far. NASA officials say it is remarkable that a commercially developed spacecraft and rocket are on the launch pad after four years of work.
Shotwell said Spacex has spent more than 600 million at this point. He met 17 of 22 benchmarks for the moment, and NASA will pay another $ 25 million once SpaceX brings the remaining steps. And Shotwell pointed out, if SpaceX is budget, is in a private company to offset this loss of profits - not the Government and the footsteps of taxpayers.
Apart from financing products, NASA has awarded SpaceX a $ 1.6 billion contract to do 12 travel replenishment to the international space station ISS.
"With the decision to prolong the life of the international space station in 2020 and possibly beyond and imminent retirement of the space shuttle, delivery of goods to the ISS has become more important than ever." So we are really looking forward to the day where we will have several redundant functionality for ISS cargo services "said McAlister."
If everything goes according to plan for the launch of the week, the Dragon spacecraft will be separated from the rocket Falcon 9, orbit around the earth twice and successfully re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. Ideally, the capsule lands in the Pacific, about 800 kilometres west of Mexico, where he will get scooped ships waiting.
The launch of the event had been set for December 7, 2005, but SpaceX has decided to postpone after engineers found signs of cracking in an extension of engine nozzle.
Shotwell said, if this first launch is a success, SpaceX could attempt to reach the space station on the second test flight.
