Porn sites more to get the ".xxx" website (CBS News)

(AP)  Porn sites are closer to getting their own address on the Internet.

Headquarters in line would be in the form of a domain name suffix ".xxx" alongside those of long-time as ".com" and "." org. »

After a battle long decade, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and numbers, or ICANN voted Friday to carry out a contract with the ICM Registry LLC to sell ending with '.xxx' domain names ICANN voted in June to start negotiating the contract.

The new suffix still has other obstacles to clear, however. A meeting in Cartagena, Colombia, ICANN decided to consult first with an Advisory Committee composed of representatives of the Government in the world. Some members raised concerns about a suffix dedicated only to sites with adult content. It is not clear, whether and how their objections would affect the suffix.

Stuart Lawley, Chief Executive of the CIM, stated that the new suffix would enjoy adult entertainment sites by making it easier for customers to find. Clients, too, would be beneficial, he says, because sites with an address ".xxx" would commit to protect consumers against identity theft and credit card fraud and to traffic in child abuse images.

Use of ".xxx" would be voluntary, although and skeptical argue that some adult sites only would abandon their existing addresses for ".com".

And it concerned conservative religious groups as a suffix ".xxx" emphatic Internet porn.

Register of the ICM, which is based in Palm Beach, Florida, applied to place a suffix ".xxx" in 2000, and then in 2004. Although ICANN itself preliminary approval in 2005, she later rejected the proposal. ICM Registry has appealed, and an independent review has concluded that ICANN is not a valid reason to change his mind - paving the way for a vote Friday.

Porn industry is completely behind ".xxx," because some consider the site such as creating a ghetto for adult content and setting the rules to which they do not want any. But said Lawley ICM already has 189,000 "pre-enrolment" for ".xxx" sites and expects to save about 500,000 new sites when it launches the registry in the second quarter of 2011.
